TABE is designed to assess reading, mathematics, language, and spelling skills. All students must take the TABE before entering any Job Preparatory classes.

State Certification Training Overview

This Firefighter I & II (Minimum Standards) State Certification Course for firefighters is a mentally, physically, and emotionally challenging program that includes extensive classroom and practical elements. The 480-hour daytime course runs for twelve consecutive weeks, meeting Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM, at the Florida State Fire College Campus, located on County Road 25A in northwest Marion County. For information, dates, and times please call (352) 369-2849 or (352) 671-7200. All class sessions are presented regardless of weather conditions and no absences are permitted.

Minimum qualifications for certification as a career firefighter.

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Have a standard high school diploma or GED.
  3. Be of good moral character.
  4. Be in excellent physical condition as determined by a thorough medical examination and be able to participate in extremely strenuous physical activity in hostile environments without restrictions.
  5. Meet the basic skills requirement of credentials or test scores (see class information).
  6. Successfully complete the Minimum Standards Training Course and the State Certification Examination.

EXCELLENT PHYSICAL CONDITIONING IS A MUST TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS COURSE.

Physical Qualification and Entrance Evaluation

The following skills must be successfully demonstrated. The date and time to be announced.

  1. Forcible Entry Evolution:
    Employing a Forcible Entry Simulator, and with an 11 ½ pound (dead-blow) shot hammer provided, drive a beam five feet by striking the end of the beam. No pushing or pulling of the beam is allowed. The end of the beam must be struck squarely and distinctly. This event is completed when the end of the beam crosses the five-foot line. The student must complete the exercise within five minutes.
  2. Sit-Ups:
    Forty-five bent knee sit-ups within two minutes. The student will start flat on their backs; knees bent; feet anchored by another student; hands behind head with fingers interlocked. The students will raise their upper body until an elbow touches a knee, and then return to the starting position. Resting is permitted in the up or down position.
  3. Push-Ups:
    Twenty-five push-ups (military style) within two minutes. The student will start in the up position, knees off the ground. The student will lower their body until the elbow reaches a ninety degree angle and then return to the starting position. Resting is allowed in the up position only (front leaning rest position).
  4. Carry Skill:
    Remove a twenty-four (24) foot extension ladder from a set of mounting brackets 5½ feet high. Carry the ladder 100 feet and place the ladder back onto the mounting brackets.
  5. Drag Skill:
    Drag two sections of 2 ½ inch hose, coupled together, one hundred yards. Turn around and drag the hose back to the starting point.
  6. Run Skill:
    Run one and one half (1.5) miles in 15 minutes or less.

Students who do not successfully complete all evolutions, will not be allowed to continue in this class. Only one attempt allowed on each event.

A $10 application fee must accompany completed Class Request Form. Due dates for all other fees will be mailed out once the prospective student is selected to attend class.

Note: Items can be purchased separatley. Bunker gear equipment must be supplied by the student or can be leased or purchased before class through an outside vendor.

 

Class Information

The Firefighter I and Firefighter II (Minimum Standards) State Certification courses are offered three (3) times a year - daytime only classes. We have upgraded our entrance requirements and those applicants who have completed the EMT or Paramedic Training Program will receive priority acceptance.

Approximately three (3) months prior to the class start date, those applicants who have been selected for each class will be notified by phone. Application packets will be mailed with confirmation, contingent upon the return of all required paperwork and fees by a specified date. The Registration, Certification, and Meal Plan fees must be sent with the completed application (approximately six (6) weeks prior to the class starting date).

 

Firefighter I and II Class Request Form

The Basic Skills requirement is one of the following: Associate of Arts, Baccalaureate or graduate-level degree or stipulated test scores on SAT, ACT, CPT, MAPS or TABE (Complete Battery or Survey, Level A) tests. TABE and CPT tests must not be over two years old.

COPIES OF ONE OF THE ABOVE MUST BE RETURNED WITH THE CLASS REQUEST FORM TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A CLASS.
